LENA RENZ

How do we represent the things that are unsure ?

In collaboration with Lena Renz, a German visual artist, we created a multi-media installation for an exhibition about design as a vehicle for transmitting scientific data, held for the French design week in September 2022.

In partnership with the research center ENS Paris-Saclay and Design Spot, we were interested in the degree of uncertainty present in the work of their paleobotanists, who study fossilized extinct plants. The installation Bloomed, showcases a collection of sculptures and films as new digital botanical artifacts, exploring the fragmentary nature of fossil floras.

The sculpture and its film visually embody the processes of fossilization, and enhance the way these processes transform, agglomerate the materials, and alter the textures of ancient plants.

This work was accomplished with the support of Else Marie Friis, former head of Paleobotany at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, Pollyanna Von Knorring, scientific illustrator based in Chicago, Brigitte Meyer Berthaud and Anne-Laure Decombeix, directors of research at the CNRS Montpellier.
